Are you energetic, reliable, and ready to play a vital role in Australian agriculture? We are seeking dedicated Field Labour Assistants to join our team in Horsham for hands-on, onsite work across field locations, glasshouses, and warehouse sorting centres. This is a unique opportunity to work at the heart of grain research, supporting world-class breeding programs for peas, lentils, and more.
The Role This is a physical, active role blending outdoors field labour with vital onsite warehouse processing. You will support essential seasonal operations to ensure critical research milestones are met.
Daily tasks include:
- Precision Picking & Sorting: Selecting single plant samples and filling sample bags, followed by seed sorting and sample processing inside the sorting centre/warehouse.
- Harvest Support: Riding in harvester cabins to collect samples and loading them into vehicles.
- Field Maintenance: Hand weeding (using a hoe) and clearing whole rows of plants.
- Research & Warehouse Assistance: Seed cleaning, biomass sampling, soil coring, documenting results, and organising trial inventory.
- Trial Prep: Preparing seeds, sorting batches, and setting up plots for upcoming sowing seasons.
Requirements This role requires physical resilience across both field and warehouse environments. You must be comfortable with:
- Significant walking, squatting, bending, and manual handling/lifting.
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions as well as indoor warehouse settings.
- Reliable transport to access local field sites and the sorting centre.
Why?
- Contribute to Innovation: Work on key agricultural initiatives, including the Victorian Grains Innovation Partnership and the Australian Grains Genebank.
- Flexible Work: Casual/temporary contract hours aligned with seasonal needs.
- Build Experience: A practical entry point for agricultural science, plant breeding, warehouse operations, or field research.
About You
- Detail-Oriented: Strictly follows protocols for sample collection, accurate seed sorting, and labelling.
- Adaptable: Blends outdoor field labour with structured, repetitive warehouse sorting tasks.
- Reliable: Punctual and committed to seasonal team deadlines.
